ALAMOSA, Colo. (December 20, 2014) —The Adams State University Grizzlies women's basketball team won this evening in their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) matchup against longtime rival, the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers by a 77-72 score. With the win the Grizzlies improve to 1-7 on the season, 1-3 in RMAC contests. Western State on the other hand drops to 3-6 on the year, 2-3 in RMAC play.
The game marked the Grizzlies first win of the season and also served as head coach
Larry Joe Hunt's first collegiate victory with the program.
The Grizzlies, while keeping things relatively close throughout the affair, put together their most complete performance of the season tonight both offensively and defensively.
Mariah Gonzales and
Lena Jaycox provided an offensive spark, generating 37 points between the dynamic duo. Gonzales led all players with 21 points scored off 5-of-12 shooting and completing 11-of-14 shots from the free throw line. Jaycox contributed with 16 points but also proved to be a pivotal defensive cog in the Grizzly unit by posting four steals and three defensive rebounds in the game.
Offensively, the Grizzlies shot 36.4 percent from the field for the game. While cold shooting affected the Grizzlies in the first half, the team put forth a 50 percent shooting mark after halftime. Free throws ultimately proved to be the difference maker for the end result as ASU posted an outstanding 84.6 percent efficiency rate in the second half.
The Grizzlies trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half and the game warranted four lead changes. The Grizzlies were able to translate 32 points off of turnovers, while the bench brought forth 23 points. In comparison Western State was only able to contribute 21 points off of turnovers.
Adams State University will now shift their focus to (RV) Colorado Mesa University, whom they will play on Sunday, Dec. 21. The ASU Sports Information department would like to remind fans that tomorrow's game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. tip off
