ALAMOSA, Colo. (December 20, 2014) – A career-high 29 points from
Juwan Buchanan and a dominate rebounding performance translated into a 100-67 win for Adams State University over rival Western State Colorado University on Saturday night from Plachy Hall.
The Grizzlies (4-3, 1-3 RMAC) held a 39-18 edge on the boards en route to their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) win of the season.
ASU surged in the second half after a tightly contested opening stanza. In the first half the Grizzlies maintained the lead but the Mountaineers closely followed and made it a three point affair after a Danny Hopkins jumper with 3:07 before the break.
With the game beginning to favor Adams State in the second half, the Grizzlies put the game out of reach with an impressive 26-11 run that elapsed just over seven minutes. The spurt expanded the ASU lead to 88-60 with 6:38 remaining. The Grizzlies ultimately reached the century mark for the second time this season thanks to a pair of late three-pointers from
Justin Kauffman and
Travante Williams.
For the night, Buchanan shot 11-of-18 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line in just 25 minutes of action.
Mike Hemsley tallied a season-high 18 points along with eight boards as Williams,
Shakir Smith, and
Michael Middlebrooks added 17, 13, and 10 points, respectively.
Adams State finished with a 51-5 edge in bench points, 35-10 edge in points off turnovers, and a 46-16 edge in points scored in the paint.
Hopkins paced the Mountaineers (2-7, 1-4 RMAC) with 17 points in defeat.
The Grizzlies close out their 2014 calendar year tomorrow night against (RV) Colorado Mesa University. Tip off is slated for 5:00 p.m. from Plachy Hall.
