LAKEWOOD, Colo. (September 19, 2014) - The Adams State University men's soccer team lost this afternoon against the Colorado Christian University Cougars by a late strike for a 2-1 loss. Adams State now falls to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. Colorado Christian University improves to 4-1, 1-0 RMAC.
It truly was a tale of two halves for the Grizzlies. ASU began play with a strong positional battle against the Cougars and kept their attacking chances to a minimum. The Grizzlies were able to translate their early possessions into attacks, outshooting the Cougars 7-2. These opportunities translated into a goal at the 38
th minute when a short cross from freshman
Carlos Castro was finished by his twin,
Mario Castro whose shot struck the crossbar before finding the back of the net.
Adams State carried then 1-0 lead in the locker room; however a different CCU team took to the pitch to start the second half. This time it was the Cougars who flipped the script on the Grizzlies, holding position of the ball and taking advantage of the Grizzly defensive front.
Eventually the CCU press broke through the ASU defense and at the 53
rd minute mark, Cougar striker Nick Seifert took a shot from eight yards outside the goal to find the back of the net for the equalizer to tie the game at 1-1. The game evolved into an affair of missed opportunities from that point for both squads and right before it seemed as if the game was imminent for overtime, the Cougars scored at the 88
th minute mark. Luke Burgard cashed in on an error from the Grizzly advance, and as the keeper left the net Burgard chipped the shot in for a goal. That proved to be all CCU needed to seal the victory, winning the game 2-1.
The Grizzlies return home for their next match against Regis University on Sept. 26 at 4:00 p.m.
