ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 24, 2015) – It was another impressive outing for the Adams State University offense during a 98-75 conference win over Colorado Christian University as
Juwan Buchanan torched the Cougars for 30 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field. As a team, the Grizzlies produced at a 61 percent shooting clip (32-52) to improve to 10-6 overall and 7-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play.
Michael Middlebrooks and
Shakir Smith joined Buchanan in double figures with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Middlebrooks added eight rebounds and seven blocks; falling just one block shy of tying his single-game high during 2014-15 (8 blocks vs Langston, 11/21/14).
Middlebrooks' strong defensive presence in the front court also played to ASU's benefit on offense as the Grizzlies finished with a 38-6 advantage in points in the paint.
The Cougars were able to maintain close distance in the first half by virtue of their 19 free throw attempts for the period. CCU made the most of their opportunities at the charity strip by converting on 16 of their attempts.
However, the tone was set as Adams State began the second half on a 12-0 run that saw the Cougars go scoreless for over four minutes of play. The ASU lead grew to 21 but CCU fought back late to reach within eight points with 7:06 remaining in regulation. The Grizzlies quickly warded off the comeback attempt and grew the lead back to 20 in the closing minutes.
Adams State also added a season-high 87 percent (28-32) shooting mark from the free throw line.
Wayne McCullough led the Cougars with 21 points in defeat.
Next up for the Grizzlies is a Jan. 27 home meeting with Northwest Indian College. That non-conference affair is slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
