ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 31, 2015) – Thanks to a steady source of offense in the second half, Western New Mexico University defeated Adams State University, 36-20, from Rex Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The charge was fueled by the Mustangs' Marques Rodgers who picked up 93 of his 144 yards rushing after halftime. Rodgers finished the game with 246 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Grizzlies (3-6, 3-4 RMAC) notched a respectable 393 yards of total offense but the Mustangs' (3-6, 2-5 RMAC) top-ranked offensive unit in the country tallied 485 yards.
Adams State settled for a
Zach Cimaglia 24-yard field goal in the first quarter but found themselves with a 10-7 lead on their first full drive of the second stanza. The 11 play, 69 yard drive was capitalized by
Phil Romero who was on the receiving end of a 10-yard touchdown throw by
Johnny Feauto.
It served as ASU's only lead of the game as WNMU responded with a field goal on the ensuing drive to tie the affair, 10-10, which also served as the halftime score.
The Mustangs' high-powered attack surfaced after the break with three consecutive scoring drives. The Grizzlies retaliated with a Cimaglia 41-yard field goal and a 20-yard touchdown strike hauled in by
James Holtrop. The Holtrop score brought ASU within one possession at 23-20.
In the fourth WNMU pulled away with 13 unanswered points including an Alfonso Wilson pick-six on the final play of the day. For the game, ASU finished with three turnovers as the Mustangs finished with a clean slate in that category.
Feauto led the ASU offense in defeat with 274 yards passing while completing 22 of his 37 attempts. The freshman tacked on two touchdowns but also surrendered two interceptions.
Addie Brown provided a balanced attack with 71 yards rushing on 16 carries while also grabbing three receptions for 71 yards.
Ryan Orr added a season-high 9 tackles (7 solo) to pace the defensive unit. Orr added 3 tackles-for-loss and a sack (12 yards).
WNMU's Mitch Glasmann tallied a game-high 329 yards passing but the ASU defense held Glasmann without a touchdown pass for the first time this season. It also marked just the second game in his career without a touchdown strike.
Next for Adams State is the annual Musket Game against Fort Lewis College on Nov. 7
