STEPHENVILLE, Texas (November 14, 2015) – A career-high 35 points from
Shakir Smith wasn't enough for Adams State University to withstand second-rank Tarleton State University on Saturday.
The Grizzlies (0-2) held a one point lead at the half but the Texans (2-0) took over at the charity stripe after the break en route to an 84-77 final score. Tarleton went 20-of-25 from the free throw line during the final stanza.
Smith shot a robust 7-of-11 from three-point territory in the contest. As a team the Grizzlies shot 51 percent (14-27) from downtown.
For the second game in a row ASU jumped to an early lead as the Grizzlies held a 17-4 advantage at the 13:55 mark in the first half. ASU would not relinquish the lead and entered halftime on top, 37-36.
A pair of free throws by Tarleton's EJ Reed early in the second gave the Texans their first lead of the game. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, they were unable to jump back on top. The program did however reach within one possession after a Smith three-pointer with 5:08 left.
As a team, ASU committed 28 fouls as
EJ Hubbard II and
Vitor Machado both fouled out in the second half. The foul total resulted in 19 more free throw attempts for the Texans.
In the loss,
Joe Bell Austin provided 11 points and a game-high 5 assists.
DJ Morgan also finished in double figures with 10 points along with 6 rebounds.
After the conclusion of the game Smith was named to the Texan Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament team. For the tournament, Smith averaged 26.5 points per game and shot 46 percent from the field.
The program's road trip continues next week with exhibition games against Utah State University (11/17) and Brigham Young University (11/20).
