ALAMOSA, Colo. (November 21, 2015) – Adams State University surrendered a double digit halftime lead; ultimately falling, 95-87, against No. 22 Midwestern State University.
The Grizzlies opened the non-conference affair with a 15-8 run capped off by back-to-back threes from
EJ Hubbard II and
Shakir Smith. Adams State continued shooting from downtown, finishing the first half at a 50 percent (6-12) clip. Adams State's momentum eventually translated to a 14 point lead in the closing minutes before halftime.
A 51-40 ASU halftime lead quickly evaporated in the second as the Mustangs (3-0) outscored the Grizzlies 20-9 to begin the period. The offensive burst eventually led to a tie game at 60-60 with 12:44 remaining. Leading the comeback charge were Midwestern's Jordan Stevens and Khapri Alston who combined for 30 of the team's 55 second half points. From there the Grizzlies found themselves trailing and were unable to mount a comeback of their own.
Much like ASU in the first half, Midwestern caught fire in the second half by shooting 64 percent (22-34) from the field and 55 percent (5-9) from three-point territory.
Hubbard II tallied a team-high 24 points in the loss along with 4 rebounds.
Bryan Umoru provided 17 points off the bench as Smith and
DJ Morgan also posted double digits with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Stevens paced the Mustangs with a game-high 29 points.
Adams State is next in action at the Milanovich Classic in Dickinson, North Dakota on Nov. 27-28. The Grizzlies take on Carroll College (Mont.) to begin tournament play on Nov. 27 at 3:00pm.
