DICKINSON, N.D. (November 27, 2015) – Adams State University added their first regular season win of the season in the form of an 89-74 decision against Carroll College (Mont.) on Friday at the Milanovich Classic hosted by Dickinson State University.
The Grizzlies (1-3) were on fire from downtown, shooting 63.2 percent (12-19).
Shakir Smith paced these efforts by shooting 5-of-6 from three-point range to finish with a game-high 23 points. The Saints (3-2) saw their biggest contribution from Oliver Carr who added 19 points in defeat. Carr quickly burst for 15 points in the opening period before the Grizzly defense made matters difficult for the sophomore. ASU's defense also limited Carroll's Zach Taylor to a season-low 9 points in 33 minutes. Taylor entered the contest averaging 20.8 points per game.
The game witnessed four ties midway through the first half but the hot-shooting Grizzlies began to pull away. A Smith trey on the final possession before halftime pushed ASU to a 34-29 lead. The small lead quickly grew as
Russ Caton's squad began the second period on an 11-2 run. A double digit lead grew to 21 before the Saints pulled within 9 with 4:32 remaining. The Grizzlies responded with an 11-0 run to secure the victory.
All 11 Grizzlies who saw the floor scored in the non-conference tilt.
Bryan Umoru and
Ante Mioc added 15 and 11 points, respectively, to join Smith in double figures.
"We played well enough to win, had good contributions from everybody. Still looking for that 'tough as nails, close out the game' team." Caton said following the contest. "I see glimpses but it's not consistently there. So we'll have to keep working for that."
The Grizzlies shot 7-of-10 (70%) from three in the first half and remained steady moving forward to finish at 12-of-19 (63.2%). The tournament win marked Caton's first as head coach for the Grizzlies.
Adams State returns to the court tomorrow at 3pm against Rocky Mountain College (Mont.)
