BB | Grizzlies Unable To Overcome Slow Start In Season Opener

Lubbock Christian Produces 11-run third inning en route to 18-15 win over Grizzlies

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 31, 2015) – An 11-run third inning by Lubbock Christian University proved to be the difference maker as Adams State University faltered in their 2015 season opener by a final score of 18-15 on Saturday evening. The two squads return to the diamond at 1:30 pm MT on Sunday and are scheduled to close the three game series on Monday at 12:00 p.m. MT.

In Saturday's loss, Andrew MacMahon got the starting nod from head coach Jim Capra. However, the senior's season debut lasted just two innings along with facing three batters in LCU's 11-run third inning.

Adams State's offense retaliated with six runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the fifth inning to make the score 18-12 in favor of LCU. Despite adding three more runs in the seventh and eighth inning, ASU was unable to catch up in this offensive juggernaut.

After early pitching struggles, relievers Bailey Garcia and Benjamin Nutsch provided steady arm support as the duo combined to pitch five innings allowing two hits and one run. Garcia carried the bulk of the aforementioned workload with four innings on the mound.

By game's end the two teams combined for 36 hits and 33 runs to usher in the new season. At the plate, Dillon Granzella was 2-of-3 with two hits, two runs, two RBI's, and a homer. Jaron Dorchinez was 2-of-4 from the dish with a triple and RBI.

The Grizzlies and Chaps return to the diamond on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. MT
