ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 21, 2015) – A trio of three-pointers in the final 1:33 brought Adams State University within striking distance of No. 9 Metropolitan State University of Denver in front of a packed house during senior night. Despite the late heroic efforts the Grizzlies fell short, 84-79, to bring their season's home schedule to a close.
With the loss Adams State drops to 16-8 overall and 12-8 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) outings. The Roadrunners moved to 22-4, 17-3 RMAC with the win.
A slow start to the game quickly put ASU in a double digit deficit. The Grizzlies were held without a field goal until a
Shakir Smith jumper at 14:49. Adams State trimmed the Metro State lead to two but the Roadrunners regained control and eventually possessed a 43-28 halftime lead. The slow Grizzly start resulted in a 32 percent (8-25) shooting performance while the Roadrunners shot at a 57 percent (15-26) clip during the opening stanza.
The efforts of
Juwan Buchanan and
Justin Kauffman sparked the team after the break as the duo combined for 31 of the team's 51 second half scoring production. Buchanan and Kauffman highlighted the late comeback attempt as well. Buchanan accounted for a three-pointer as Kauffman drained two that made it a 81-79 Metro State lead with 35 seconds remaining. The sharp shooting ended there as following shots from downtown failed to reach the bottom of the nylon.
Buchanan finished with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds with
Mikey Hope adding 14 points. Kauffman,
Marcus Hall, and Smith tacked on 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively.
Nicholas Kay led the Roadrunners with 21 points and eight boards.
The Grizzlies are next in action against Colorado Mesa University on Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m. from Grand Junction.
