MBB | Grizzlies Add Pivotal Win Over CMU on the Road

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (February 27, 2015) – Sparked by a 50 percent (31-62) shooting clip, Adams State University left Brownson Arena with a convincing 82-66 win over Colorado Mesa University on Friday night. Senior Juwan Buchanan led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season as the Grizzlies improve to 17-8 overall and 13-8 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action. The Mavericks see their five-game winning streak snapped and fall to 19-8, 14-7 RMAC.

Unlike their previous meeting in Alamosa which saw numerous lead changes, the Grizzlies maintained the lead for the entire duration of Friday's tilt. CMU went without a field goal until the 15:40 mark in the first period as the Grizzlies opened the game on a 15-5 run. Adams State experienced their largest lead of the night of 17 points midway through the second stanza.

With a healthy field goal percentage, the Grizzlies added to their efforts with a strong showing from three-point territory. The Grizzlies knocked down seven treys after halftime with two apiece from Buchanan, Shakir Smith, and Mikey Hope. ASU shot 50 percent (7-14) from three in the second half and finished the game at 40 percent (10-25).

The Mavericks gained offensive traction after a slow start but were unable to catch a hot shooting Grizzly unit. Junior Ryan Stephan paced CMU with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort.

Buchanan concluded the game by shooting 9-of-16 from the field and added two assists to complement his 21 points and 10 boards. Smith chipped in 20 points and four assists as Hope and Mike Hemsley tallied 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Grizzlies wrap up the regular season tomorrow night against rival Western State Colorado University from Gunnison at 7:00 p.m.
