MBB | Buchanan & Hope Power Grizzlies Past Cowboys

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (February 6, 2015) – For the first time in seven years Adams State University left the confines of the John A. Wilson Complex with a win as the Grizzlies defeated New Mexico Highlands University, 98-84, on Friday night.  The last Adams State win in Las Vegas occurred on Jan. 17, 2008.

Seniors Juwan Buchanan and Mikey Hope both totaled career-highs with 33 and 29 points, respectively, as ASU moves to 13-6 overall and 9-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. The program has now won 10 of their last 13 games.

Against Highlands, the Grizzlies notched an impressive 60 points in the first half. Their double digit lead at intermission evaporated as the Cowboys began the second half on a 14-0 run to take a 63-60 lead. The Grizzlies promptly countered with a 9-0 run of their own and never looked back.

For the game, ASU shot 50 percent (29-58) from the floor and sank a season-high 34 free throws on 39 attempts (87%). The robust opening stanza was highlighted by 22 points from Hope followed closely by Buchanan's 19. The duo continued to produce after halftime and combined to shoot 19-of-25 from the field for the game. Each player also went 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. Michael Middlebrooks, the reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week, helped ASU win the battle of the boards as the senior collected 13 rebounds (seven offensive) while adding nine points.

The Grizzlies now prep for a Saturday night showdown with Western New Mexico University at 7:30 p.m. from Silver City.
