SILVER CITY, N.M. (February 7, 2015) – A shaky start resulted in a slim 37-35 halftime lead for Adams State University but a 64 percent (18-28) shooting mark after the break led the Grizzlies past Western New Mexico University. The win caps off a 2-0 weekend on the road – their second such feat during the conference portion of the season.
The 80-67 victory improves ASU to 14-6 overall and 10-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). The Grizzlies now take their five game winning streak back to Alamosa for meetings with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Feb. 13 and Colorado State University-Pueblo on Feb. 14.
Adams State suffered through an early offensive dry spell that translated into WNMU maintaining the lead for much of the opening stanza. It wasn't until a
Bruno Machado tip-in at 8:39 did ASU hold the upper hand. The Mustangs regained the lead but a
Mikey Hope three and a layup from
Michael Middlebrooks sent the Grizzlies into the break with the slight advantage.
Supplying significant fuel to create separation were Middlebrooks and
Mike Hemsley who combined for 16 of the team's first 20 points after halftime. With the aforementioned production the Grizzly lead expanded to double digits at 57-46. The lead remained at that margin for the rest of the night as Adams State completed their season sweep over WNMU.
Juwan Buchanan and
Mike Hemsley led the team with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Hemsley's 11 points were scored in only 11 minutes of action as the senior shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the field along with a 3-of-4 mark from the charity stripe. Middlebrooks fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards while also chipping in four blocks.
Terrez Scott paced the Mustangs with 13 points as five other WNMU players finished in double figures.
The Grizzlies now return to Alamosa for a Feb. 13 game with UCCS at approximately 7:30 p.m.
