ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 6, 2015) Chadron State College entered Alamosa Friday night to take on Adams State University for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) dual. The Eagles exited Plachy Hall with a 27-17 win as the Grizzlies fall to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in RMAC bouts.
Â
Note: First match began at 174Â
The night began on a high note at 174 as
Mark Mabry, Jr. created a buzz in his match with CSC's Caleb Copeland. Copeland started off the action a minute into the first period with a strong takedown attempt but Mabry -- always strong with his takedown defense -- locked in a heavy ankle pick. As expected, Mabry reversed Copeland's advance into two points for the green and white. From there Mabry took control in dominant fashion and turned his takedown reversal into three back points. The second period began with Mabry on top as he promptly turned Copeland once again for three more back points. Ultimately, Mabry would ride out his takedowns and back point successfully for a tech fall 6:09 into the bout.
Â
Next was arguably the most exciting match between
Mario Garcia and Dylan Fors at 184. Garcia began the matchup with a strong takedown as the first round buzzer sounded. The junior tied up Fors, turning his momentum into a forceful single-leg takedown. Fors would soon after gain an escape point to counter. After a scoreless second the match built up to an applaud-worthy ending period. Garcia began on top and Fors quickly responded with an escape point to tie things up at 2-2. The period rode out with neither competitor creating a successful opportunity. The overtime period was nearly avoided as the Grizzly earned all but a takedown, however, just before dominant position could be earned the final buzzer sounded.
Â
Overtime was short lived as Garcia wasted absolutely no time and collected a takedown for the 4-2 win.
Â
At 197,
Amer Tipura was pinned early by Devan Fors in the first to give Chadron the match win.
Â
Austin Andrade put together a solid effort with a loss at 285. Andrade faced Jake Weber as the two would gather their respective points from period starting escapes. Weber earned himself the winning points at the end of the third period, however, as he slipped into a takedown late in the match.
Â
Jerry Huff was able to boost ASU's morale at 125 in dominating fashion. He wasted little time against Robert Ozuna and capped off his evening with a cradle-induced pin with just seven second left in the first period.
Â
J.C. Henderson shook hands with Zack Dennery at 141 as the duo battled through two scoreless periods. The third period, however, turned the match into another nail biter. Henderson was able to fight off any CSC scoring through the first minute of the final period. From there, though, Dennery managed the end of the match well. He snagged five late points to secure himself the win for Chadron.
Â
Devin Vasquez created another buzz in the gym at 149 against Jake Anderson. Once again, the Eagles took ASU into a nail biter as the small scoring matchup was tied at 4-4 with just one minute left in the third period. Anderson claimed a strong takedown with only 30 seconds remaining to seal up the Chadron finish.
Â
At 157,
Jacob Deaguero defended against Reed Burgener's onslaught. The match ran deep into the third as the two stood at a 3-3 tie. With such a close and low scoring affair, Burgener ended the night for Deaguero with a pin at the 6:17 mark.
Â
The final bout of the night consisted of
Justin Samora defeating Chance Helmick at 165. Chadron's freshman took a takedown in the first period but Samora responded with an escape point. The Grizzly added another escape point in the second period to knot the score at 2-2.
Â
With Samora on top to begin the final frame, Helmick earned a fast escape point to take a 3-2 lead. The gritty Samora had the final say with a late take down to edge out his opponent, 4-3.
