ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 7, 2015) – The Colorado School of Mines traveled south to Alamosa on Saturday night to challenge Adams State University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action. The two teams were evenly matched throughout but Mines escaped with a 25-21 dual win.
Note: Dual began at 184 weight class Mario Garcia began the night with a dual against Ian Cheatum of CSM. About a minute into the bout, Garcia threw full momentum into a strong ankle pick, able to grab hold of two points via a takedown. Soon after Cheatum ensnared Garcia into a huge hip toss, ending in takedown points for the Orediggers. Cheatum slid in the high leg but Garcia was able to hold off the advance as the period ended.
After an action-packed opening period for CSM, Garcia tallied the lone points of the second with a takedown in the closing seconds. With Garcia trailing to begin the third he tied up Cheatum en route to a big toss to tie the matchup at 6-6. With control of the mat, Garcia turned a takedown into back points with just 10 seconds left on the clock to secure himself an 8-6 victory.
Next under the lights was freshman
Amer Tipura against junior Paul Wilson at 197. The match took a slow start as a heavy club from Wilson left Tipura with a blood timeout. Wilson slowly inched his way to a 10-2 major decision via numerous takedowns and stalls.
Austin Andrade shifted momentum back to ASU at 285 by outlasting Nick DeBruyn. The two couldn't gain advantages over one another as Andrade scored the only big move late in the first period in the form of a takedown. From there, the two gained respective escapes but it was just enough for Andrade to squeeze out a 3-1 victory.
Jerry Huff was next and wasted no time versus Zach Garcia at 125. After testing shots and Garcia's boundaries, Huff began to work earning his first two points at the 2:00 mark of the first period. The second period began with Huff on bottom, only to quickly escape Garcia's grasp. Huff's strong standup gave him way to roll through to snag a single leg takedown. A seemingly low scoring affair for Huff, he then kicked it in gear for the third period and eventually ended his match with a 13-0 major decision victory.
Jacob Gerken of Mines faced
J.C. Henderson at 141. Gerken grabbed a takedown in the first but the match went without any further scoring until the third period. Henderson started on top in the final frame as Gerken escaped and then replied with his own takedown. At the final buzzer Henderson was held scoreless for a 5-0 loss.
Devin Vasquez saw the mat next at 149 with Skyler Lykens as his challenger. The two scrambled through the first period, both scoring back-and-forth through the first period. Lykens took control of the points as he reversed a Vasquez advance into four back points late in the period. Up 9-3, Lyken shot early on Vasquez to turn him towards a pin. Lyken took the match by fall 4:21 in.
Jacob Deaguero took on John Crowley at 157. Early into the first period, the low scoring affair went Crowley's way as he scooped up a double leg take down and landed himself a pin at 4:43.
Despite the back-to-back pins, the night finished strong for the Grizzlies with top-notch performances from
Justin Samora and
Mark Mabry, Jr. At 165, Samora faced Ethan Ruby. The first period was a strong indication of things to come. Samora's numerous takedowns were all followed up with scored backpoints with Ruby only grabbing three points from escapes. Samora brought the match to an early end via a 19-3 tech fall at 5:12.
Mabry, Jr. ended the night with a strong showing against Ben Krantz in the 174 weight division. Mabry tested Krantz early and quickly secured a pin at 2:21.
The Grizzlies wrap up their home slate on Feb. 11 with a non-conference dual with Fort Hays State University at 6:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be provided for fans unable to attend.
