ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 21, 2015) – Junior leftfielder
Dillon Bollig supplied two of Adams State University's six home runs on Saturday during a doubleheader sweep against Colorado Christian University.
The Grizzlies escaped with a 3-2 game one victory with a walk-off homer from Bollig in the bottom of the ninth. Senior pitcher
Andrew MacMahon tossed a gem in game two as the offensive provided plenty of insurance for a 10-1 win.
The wins improve Adams State to 9-13 overall and 5-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action. The Cougars fall to 10-15, 3-12 RMAC in defeat. The Grizzlies take to the field once again tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. for the final game of the series.
Game OneBollig promptly put an end to the game with a walk-off home run to right center in the bottom of the ninth. The Grizzlies were all about the long ball with three solo shots during the 3-2 win. Second baseman
Jerid Huggins homered in the fourth as first baseman
Drew Wells connected for his team-leading fourth home run of the season in the sixth.
The Grizzlies maintained a 1-0 lead until the Cougars produced a pair of runs in the sixth. However, ASU quickly knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth with Wells' homer. An inning later in the seventh, ASU left the bases juiced with no runs to show for it after Jaren Dorchinez hit into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.
The extra inning dramatics soon ended with Bollig's two-out home run in the ninth.
CCU also went yard in the opening stanza with a two-run bomb by infielder Zach Scott in the sixth. Starting pitcher
J.D. Heredia lasted six innings as reliever Benjamin Nutsh (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of work. Nutsh held the Cougars without a hit during his outing and recorded a pair of strikeouts along with three groundouts.
Bollig and Wells each notched three hits and an RBI during the win to pace the ASU offense.
Game TwoMacMahon (1-3) kept the CCU bats quiet with his complete game performance in the 10-1 win. MacMahon forced 12 ground outs, six fly outs, and recorded a strikeout in seven innings on the bump. The senior allowed only six hits and was unfortunately denied a complete game shutout as a CCU run scored in the top of the seventh.
After giving up a pair of hits in the top of the first, MacMahon settled into a rhythm. He allowed only one hit over the next five frames before running into trouble during the seventh. The complete game performance marked MacMahon's first win of the season.
Offensively the bats continued to produce as Bollig,
Chris Morley, and
Dillon Granzella each sent a ball over the fence. Along with the home runs, the Grizzlies also tallied four doubles.
ASU held a close 2-0 lead until the Grizzlies added three runs in the fifth and followed with a five-run sixth inning. Morley and Bollig homered in the fifth with Granzella following suit in the sixth.
Bollig notched another three hits to match his game one tally. He also finished with a game-high three RBI performance.
First pitch for tomorrow's series finale is slated for 12:00 p.m. with live stats available for fans unable to attend.
