ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 22, 2015) – Fans were treated to a series finale slugfest between Adams State University and Colorado Christian University on Sunday afternoon. The Grizzlies came out on top, 20-17, as the two teams combined for 35 hits. With the win, ASU takes the series, 3-1, and improves their overall record to 10-13 and 6-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play.
It was a bleak start for head coach
Jim Capra and crew as the Cougars posted a five-run first inning. The Grizzlies countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame which set the tone for an offensive day at the park.
Starting pitcher
Tanner Wiemers lasted only one inning and was replaced for reliever
Ben Williams. Despite the personnel change, CCU tacked on another run in the second and added two more in the third.
With CCU taking an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the fourth, the Grizzlies posted a staggering 10-run frame to take a 16-8 advantage. For the inning, ASU sent 15 batters to the plate. Along with Adams State posting 10 runs on seven hits the Cougars aided in their demise by giving up four walks, a wild pitch, and an error. Centerfielder
Chris Morley tallied a double, single, two runs, and an RBI to highlight ASU in the frame.
The Grizzlies experienced their largest lead, 20-9, after the sixth but the Cougars made things interesting down the stretch. CCU added three runs in both the seventh and eighth to set up a dramatic finish in the ninth.
With no outs and a runner on first, CCU's Titan Marler sent a RBI triple down the right field line. Austin Atkerson followed with a RBI single to right center. The Cougars inched a step closer with a Stephen Galambos ground rule double to place a pair of Cougars in scoring position. The bleeding ended there as
Challis Wright replaced
Josh Keaton on the mound and promptly record two more outs to end the game.
Shortstop
Jaron Dorchinez posted a game-high six RBI performance and fell a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Morley,
Jerid Huggins, and
Dillon Bollig each accounted for four runs apiece as Morley, Bollig,
Zach Moldenhauer, and Dorchinez each tallied three hits apiece.
Williams (1-1) records the win for ASU with three innings of work in the slugfest as
Challis Wright picks up his second save of the season.
As a team the Grizzlies hit .455 at the plate and set a new season-high with 20 runs. The CCU pitching staff combined for 11 walks in the series finale.
Next for ASU is a four game home series with No. 1 Colorado Mesa University. Game one is slated for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch on March 27.
