ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 29, 2015) – Adams State University held a 10-8 after four innings but 13 unanswered runs by No. 1 Colorado Mesa University paved the way for a 21-10 defeat for the Grizzlies. Adams State entered the game with intentions of splitting the series but ultimately fell short of their goal with Sunday's decision.
The afternoon outing concluded ASU's 13-game home stand as the team now preps for their first conference road game against Colorado School of Mines on April 2 at 6:00 p.m.
The 21-10 loss to CMU moves the Grizzlies to 11-16 overall and 7-9 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. The Mavericks improve to 27-3, 19-1 RMAC.
The offensive onslaught in Sunday's series finale began with a four-run top of the first for Colorado Mesa. The first-ranked team in NCAA Division II followed with a run in the second and another during the third.
Adams State kept pace with a run in the first inning and two during the second. The Grizzlies took their first lead of the game during the bottom of the third as
Jaron Dorchinez sparked the inning with a leadoff homer to centerfield. After a
Drew Wells walk and a
Dillon Granzella single,
Marco Garmendia delivered an RBI single to score Wells from second. The inning was capped off with another run via a passed ball to tie the game at 6-6 followed by a
Chris Morley groundout to score Garmendia to take a 7-6 lead.
The tone of the game did not allow the lead to last as the Mavericks notched a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead, 8-7. Momentum shifted once again in the bottom of the frame as
Jerid Huggins and Dorchinez produced back-to-back RBI triples. Dorchinez's hit pushed ASU ahead once again, 9-8. Wells followed with an RBI single to score Dorchinez to stretch the lead to 10-8.
The fourth inning highlights would be the last for ASU as the Mavericks went on to tally 13 unanswered runs. CMU cleared the way with six runs in the fifth, three runs in the seventh, a run in the eighth, and three more in the ninth.
Dorchinez fell one hit shy of the cycle for the second time this season. The senior went 3-for-5 at the dish with a double escaping him from completing the cycle feat. Reliever
Ben Williams (1-2) picked up the loss after entering the game in the fourth.
The Grizzlies are next in action on April 2 against Colorado School of Mines at 6:00 p.m. from Golden.
