BB | Grizzlies Power Past Regis For Win In Home Opener

ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 6, 2015) – The bats came alive for Adams State University against Regis University in the program's 2015 home opener on Friday afternoon from the ASU baseball field. The 16-9 win was ASU's first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) victory as the program's overall record now stands at 4-6. With the loss, Regis moves to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

The Grizzlies wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning and a five-run second inning. Adams State would score in all but two frames against the Rangers and tallied 20 hits.

RBI singles in the first inning from Zach Moldenhauer, Jaron Dorchinez, and Dillon Granzella began the onslaught as Dillon Bollig and Drew Wells both connected for a home run over the right field fence an inning later.

The Grizzlies maintained a 9-1 lead before the Rangers retaliated with a seven-run fifth inning. That would be as close as Regis got as ASU added three more runs in the bottom of the frame. The much needed insurance runs came from a Tyler Thurston triple to score Morley and Quinn Tiernan. Thurston would also score on the play after a Regis throwing error.

Tiernan put a cap to the big day with a pair of two RBI doubles in the sixth and eighth inning. The senior catcher finished the series opener with a four RBI performance to lead all players.

Starting pitcher Jeffrey Schmitt picked up his second win of the season with four innings of work on the mound. The Cheyenne, Wyoming native faced 22 batters before being pulled in the middle of RU's big fifth inning. Ben Williams, Bailey Garcia, Ryan Richardson, and Challis Wright all came on in relief to preserve the lead.

The Grizzlies and Rangers meet tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
