ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 7, 2015) – Adams State University senior
Jerid Huggins combined for six hits, five runs, four RBI, and two home runs during Saturday's doubleheader against Regis University. With Huggins leading the way, the Grizzlies began the day with a 7-3 win before the Regis bats came alive to defeat ASU, 17-4, in game two. The doubleheader split moves ASU to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action. The Rangers now stand at 5-8, 1-4 RMAC. The series concludes tomorrow with a single-game tilt at 12:00 p.m. from the ASU Baseball Field.
Game OneStarter
J.D. Heredia held the Rangers without a hit through three frames as the senior collected four ground outs, three fly outs, and fanned two batters during that span. Huggins kicked off the offense with a RBI double to right field in the second as
Marco Garmendia brought Huggins in to score two batters later.
Chris Morley capped off the three-run inning with a two RBI bomb over the right field fence.
Huggins went yard to centerfield in the fourth and again in the sixth.
Dillon Granzella made it back-to-jacks as he followed Huggins in the sixth with a homer to right field. Huggins concluded game one by going 3-of-3 at the plate with three runs and three RBI.
Heredia lasted into the fifth inning before being pulled for reliever
Benjamin Nutsch. Heredia allowed five hits and struck out four to move to 2-2 on the season.
Game TwoAn eight-run third inning by Regis paved the way for a 17-4 defeat. For the inning, the Rangers sent 15 batters to the plate as the Grizzlies made two pitching changes during the frame. The personnel change appeared to have little effect on the hot Regis bats as the Rangers tacked on another three runs in the fifth and three more during the sixth. Head coach
Jim Capra utilized a total of six pitchers as starter
Dylan Sherry was credited with the loss in 2.1 innings of work. Offensively, ASU notched 12 hits but were only able to produce four runs.
It was Huggins once again who put the Grizzlies on the scoreboard with a third inning RBI single to left field. He later accounted for a run thanks to a
Jaron Dorchinez single to score Huggins from second base.
Making matters difficult for Adams State was Regis freshman Matt Heibult who kept the Grizzlies guessing through five innings on the mound. Heibult gave up nine hits but allowed only two runs while striking out five.
The four game series wraps up tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
