ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 8, 2015) – It was an interesting and unusual finish to the series between Adams State University and Regis University. The Grizzlies held an 11-4 lead moving into the top of the ninth but a seven-run surge from Regis knotted the game at 11-11. Adams State avoided extra innings as
Chris Morley collected a game-winning single to score
Jake Montoya in the bottom of the ninth. Sunday's victory secured the series win for ASU who improve to 6-7 overall and 3-1 against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) opponents. The Rangers move to 5-9, 1-5 RMAC in defeat.
14 Regis batters entered the box during the seven-run ninth which was aided partially by ASU defensive miscues. A bulk of the late rally came at the expense of pitcher
Challis Wright who entered the inning in relief. After sitting down the first batter, Wright ran into trouble and was pulled for reliever
Ryan Richardson who also struggled before getting the last two outs.
Little time was wasted by ASU in reclaiming the lead as Montoya doubled to bring Morley up to the plate. A few pitches into the at-bat Morley launched a ball to left center to bring Montoya in to score.
Despite the late inning heroics the majority of the game carried a different theme as the Grizzlies led by seven runs on two separate occasions. Adams State produced three runs in the first, third, and fourth inning. Six ASU players notched a multi-hit performance as
Drew Wells sent a three RBI homer to left center in the third. Wells finished 2-of-4 at the plate with a team-best four RBI.
Logan Knox paced the Rangers with two hits and four RBI.
The Grizzlies combined for 57 hits and 39 runs during the four game series.
Next for ASU is a single-game road affair against the United State Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on March 10 at 2:00 p.m.
