DENVER (April 11, 2015) – Adams State University dropped a Saturday doubleheader to Metropolitan State University of Denver from the Regency Athletic Complex. The Roadrunners escaped with a 7-6 game one victory and edged the Grizzlies in game two, 5-2.
The defeats move ASU to 14-20 overall and 10-13 in league play.
The final game of the series is slated for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
Game 1The Grizzlies did their best to rally with a four-run seventh inning but ultimately fell short, 7-6, as Metro State galloped to an early 6-1 lead after one inning of play. The difficult opening frame quickly ended
Andrew MacMahon's day on the mound. The senior faced just eight batters in his start; allowing six runs on five hits.
Tanner Wiemers entered in relief to stop the bleeding as the junior tallied four strikeouts and allowed two hits during 3.1 innings of work.
The Grizzlies were unable to do much offensively off Roadrunner pitcher Mike Thill who gave up only five hits through six innings. That changed in the seventh as Thill's day ended in favor of MSUD reliever Josh Moore.
The four-run seventh began with a
Marco Garmendia double down the left field line. Two batters later
Chris Morley brought his teammate in to score with an RBI single. The hit parade continued as
Tyler Thurston,
Dillon Bollig, and
Zach Moldenhauer followed with consecutive singles. The hits by Bollig and Moldenhauer brought in two more ASU runs to tighten the MSUD lead at 7-5. An RBI sacrifice fly by
Jaron Dorchinez inched the Grizzlies closer at 7-6 before the game concluded with a
Jerid Huggins ground out to second base.
Despite the comeback falling short, the Grizzlies produced four runs off five hits during the seventh.
Bollig led the offensive with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI's and a run scored. Morley tacked on a 2-for-3 day with two runs scored and an RBI.
Game 2With the exception of a run in the second and fourth inning, the Grizzlies were limited offensively during a 5-2 defeat.
A
Dillon Granzella RBI double in the second put Adams State on the scoreboard as a Huggins ground-rule double scored Bollig in the fourth. After the hit by Huggins in the fourth, ASU added only two more hits in the game.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners produced a two-run first inning and later tacked on insurance runs in the third, fifth, and sixth. Pitcher
J.D. Heredia lasted 4.1 innings in his start and moves to 3-4 on the season with the loss. Heredia allowed four runs on six hits while fanning two batters.
Huggins paced the team at the plate with two hits, a run, and an RBI.
The Grizzlies and Roadrunners complete the weekend series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. from the Regency Athletic Complex.
