DENVER (April 12, 2015) – Another comeback effort fell short for Adams State University on Sunday against Metropolitan State University of Denver. After trailing 5-0, the Grizzlies chipped away with back-to-back homers from
Tyler Thurston and
Dillon Bollig in the fourth. More timely hitting continued as ASU eventually tied the game at 7-7 with a run in the ninth. However, Metro State responded with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the frame to end the game.
The 8-7 loss completes MSUD's series sweep against the Grizzlies who now stand at 14-21 overall and 10-14 in conference play.
A pair of ASU defensive errors in the first inning helped Metro State build an early 3-0 lead. The Roadrunners expanded their lead an inning later as MSUD collected three doubles off starter
Ben Williams which translated into two more runs.
Now facing a 5-0 deficit, the ASU bats struggled to the tune of one hit through three innings. That all changed as Thurston and Bollig went back-to-back to leadoff the fourth.
The Roadrunners responded with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning that forced head coach
Jim Capra to call on reliever
Challis Wright out of the pen. The senior kept Metro State in-check and gave up only five hits and one run through four innings of work. Wright also struck out four and did not give up a walk during his outing.
The Grizzlies cut the lead to 6-5 with three runs in the fifth. The production came via RBI knocks by
Chris Morley and Thurston.
Zach Moldenhauer also brought in a run after grounding out to third. However, a Dylan Baca homer in the bottom of the frame extended Metro State's lead to 7-5.
The chess match continued in the sixth as Morley collected an RBI sacrifice fly to score
Dillon Granzella. Morley's second RBI of the day tightened the gap at 7-6.
The Grizzlies eventually tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the ninth. With runners on second and third, Bollig sent a grounder to second base. Despite recording an out, Bollig's ability to put the ball in play scored Jake Heaton.
However, thoughts of extra baseball were put to rest as Trent Maloney sent a home run over the left-center wall to lead off the ninth.
Benjamin Nutsch picked up the loss after entering the game in the eighth.
Next for Adams State is their home finale series with New Mexico Highlands University. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. on April 17.
