PUEBLO, Colo. (April 14, 2015) – Adams State University dropped both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday against No. 8 Colorado State University-Pueblo. The Grizzlies suffered a 9-5 loss in game one and finished the twin bill with a lopsided 15-1 defeat. Adams State now heads into their home series finale on Friday against New Mexico Highlands University with a 14-23 overall record and a 10-14 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action.
Game OneThere was little cause for celebration in the 9-5 loss as the Grizzlies accounted for six strikeouts through three innings. During that stretch, only two runners reached scoring position. Frustration became even more apparent during the middle of the game against a trio of CSU-Pueblo relief pitchers who kept ASU hitless until the seventh inning.
In the seventh, an abrupt five-run frame was highlighted by four consecutive scoring plays. The first run crossed home plate as
Dillon Bollig was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Jerid Huggins then connected for an RBI single followed by a wild pitch to score
Nico Porreco. The CSU-Pueblo miscues continued via an error on the second baseman to bring in Bollig.
The final ASU run came from an
Adam Cox RBI single to score Huggins. Any chance of a major comeback was halted two batters later with a fielder's choice out to end the game.
Both Huggins and Cox tallied two hits apiece to lead the offense as
Anthony Parise (1-2) picked up the loss in two innings of work.
Game TwoA two-out RBI double by Huggins in the top of the first was certainly a good start for the boys from Alamosa. However, it proved to be the only source of offense for ASU in a 15-1 defeat. Huggins' 24
th RBI of the season sent Porreco around to touch home after leading the game off with a single to center field.
After a
Tyler Bybee single in the second and a Porreco triple in the third, the Grizzlies were held hitless for the remainder of the game. The collective efforts of six CSU-Pueblo pitchers forced ASU into eight ground outs, six fly outs, and recorded six strikeouts on a combined 85 total pitches.
Pitcher
Tom Aramovich was credited with the loss in 0.2 innings on the mound. Aramovich gave up eight runs on four hits while also walking four batters.
After a 10-game road trip the Grizzlies now return to Alamosa this weekend for their home finale series with New Mexico Highlands University.
Heading into the final stretch of the regular season the two RMAC foes are positioning for the fourth, and final, spot in the upcoming conference tournament.
First pitch is set for Friday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. at the ASU Baseball Field.
