DENVER—The Adams State University softball team is back on their winning trail after dropping the finale of last week's four-game series with the New Mexico Highlands University Mustangs with two narrow wins on Saturday in Pod Weekend action.
The Grizzlies won their opening game 6-5 over conference rival CSU-Pueblo before defeating the host Regis Rangers 2-1 in their second game.
In the first game for the Grizzlies, the ThunderWolf offense quickly jumped on Adams State, scoring three runs in the opening frame on a three-run bomb from Chrystal Reese for the lead.
Adams State got on the board in the bottom of the third on two hits including a single by
Erika Ecsedy to right field on a 0-2 pitch to drive Kyanna Quarrell home.
CSU-Pueblo added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI-double by Lexie Martindale before Adams State erupted with four runs in the bottom of fifth with a three-run blast from
Erica Haugum to take a 5-4 lead.
CSU-Pueblo tied the game 5-5 in the next at bat on a two-out single by Madison Wolfe, who was thrown out at second to end the inning.
The Grizzlies regained the lead in the sixth, with two hits and one error in the inning.
A seventh-inning rally with two runners on base fell short for the ThunderWolves as
Morgan McWilliams earned her second save of the season. She pitched one inning and allowed two hits in relief of
Kelsey Sellars, who earned her ninth win of the season. Sellars allowed five runs on nine hits and four walks in six innings of work. She had five strikeouts in the game.
In the second game, Regis brought one across the plate early in the bottom of the first off a Carlie Sexton single to center field. Quarrell then notched a solo home run in the top of the third to tie the game, 1-1.
It was not until the top of the sixth that ASU tallied the go-ahead run, 2-1 as
April Riggins hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score
Tessa Beran.
In each bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, the Rangers would leave a runner on base as
Kaycee Prevedel tossed a complete game and allowed the lone run one seven innings and one walk. They had four strikeouts.
Adams State combined for 13 hits on the day leaving a total of nine runners on base.
The Grizzlies, who are now 18-16 overall and 16-12 in the conference, will play both Regis and CSU-Pueblo again on Sunday. They will play the Rangers at 11 a.m. and ThunderWolves at 1 p.m.
