ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 19, 2015) – Another day resulted in another comeback win for Adams State University from the ASU Baseball Field. In Sunday's 2015 home finale it was
Dillon Granzella who provided the biggest spark with a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth. Granzella's shot was part of a six-run eighth inning that lifted Adams State to a 10-7 win over New Mexico Highlands University.
The victory secured a critical 3-1 series win for the Grizzlies who now control their RMAC postseason dreams with eight regular season games remaining. The third consecutive comeback win gives ASU a 17-24 overall mark and a 13-15 conference record.
Facing a 3-1 count, Granzella's grand slam to right field gave Adams State their first lead of the game at 10-6. It marked the junior's fourth round trip of the season and first since March 7. The colossal inning included doubles by
Tyler Thurston,
Dillon Bollig, and
Jaron Dorchinez as the Grizzlies batted around the order. The doubles by Bollig and Dorchinez each produced a run to inch ASU closer before Granzella's homer. Unable to find a solution, the Cowboys made two pitching changes during the frame.
The comeback win was a result of Highlands establishing a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Grizzlies fought back and eventually tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth. Granzella kick started the offense with an RBI single in the second as Thurston brought
Chris Morley across home plate in the third via an RBI ground-rule double.
Jake Montoya tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run bomb to right center in the fifth.
The game remained tied until Highlands notched a run in the seventh and another in the eight before the Grizzlies settled the matter with their memorable bottom of the eighth.
Keeping the game within reach was reliever
Dylan Sherry who pitched a serviceable 4.2 innings. Sherry allowed two runs on two hits while striking out three.
Bailey Garcia picked up the win in 1.1 innings of work. The freshman recorded the final out of the eighth and remained on the bump to close out the ninth. Garcia gave up one run on one hit but also fanned two batters.
Granzella finished his big day with five RBI's and a run scored while going 2-for-4 at the plate. In total, ASU collected seven extra-base hits (five doubles and two home runs).
With the remainder of the regular season on the road, the Grizzlies begin a four game series with Regis University on April 24 from Denver.
