DENVER-The Adams State University softball team earned a monumental win on Thursday afternoon as the No. 5 seeded Grizzlies were able to upset the No. 1 seeded Metro State Roadrunners, 3-0, in the second round of the Rocky Mountain Atheltic Conference Softball Tournament in Denver. The win was only the Roadrunner's second loss of the season at home. The Roadrunners won the RMAC regular season championship for the first time since 2011 when they were co-champions, and for the fourth time in the eight-year history of the program.
The Roadrunners, who's No. 25 national ranking on Feb. 18 was the first top-25 appearance for the Roadrunners since being ranked No. 15 in the 2011 preseason NFCA poll, entered the weekend ranked No. 18.
The Grizzlies then jumped on the Roadrunners early.
Kalin Johnson opened the game with a single before
Erika Ecsedy singled up the middle while
Erica Haugum nailed a 3-run blast to right field.
Starting pitcher
Kaycee Prevedel allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first but quickly got three outs and closing out the first two innings with no more threats.
The Roadrunners scored their first run in the bottom of third inning on an illegal pitch but still, Prevedel kept the Roadrunners in check.
Adams State loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning after Johnson had a stellar at bat and an 11-pitch single. The Grizzlies were able to get two runs on a single from Ecsedy.Haugum then earned her fourth and fifth RBI of the game with a 2-run double to put Adams State up 7-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Roadrunners scored their first hit of the game as the leadoff hitter, Mary Towner scored a single but a run did not come across. In the bottom of the fifth inning a leadoff single and an error came back to haunt them as Metro scored a run.
The Roadrunners then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Towner nailed a homer and a 2-out single up the middle forced Head Coach
Dervin Taylor to move the bullpen with
Lauren Murphy Payne.
Murphy was able to throw just four pitches to get out of the inning.
Morgan McWilliams came in to get the three final outs for the save by facing just four batters.
With the win, the Grizzlies are into the semifinals on Friday where they will play either Western New Mexico, a team that swept the Grizzlies on February 27th and 28th, or Regis at 2:30 p.m. The game between the two was entering the bottom of the 12th inning tied at 2 at last report.
The double-elimination tournament continues on Friday and Saturday at Metro State University.
