SB| Grizzly bats go cold in semifinal loss to Regis

DENVER—The Adams State University softball team was only able to muster two base hits in Friday afternoon's 6-1 loss in the semifinal of the 2015 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament against the Regis Rangers. Even though the Grizzlies stranded five potential runs on base, a 4-run bottom of the sixth inning was also a deciding factor for the Grizzly loss.

After some light sprinkles in the game, the Grizzlies and Rangers opened up the championship semifinal game with threats from an ominous dark cloud aiming right at the Regency Athletic Complex at Metro State University Denver.

The Grizzlies opened the game with a 1-2-3 offensive innings before starting pitcher Laura Murphy got one out to start the bottom half of the inning. She then threw a four-pitch walk, hit a batter and allowed a single to load the bases before lightning came down within a five-mile radius forcing game management to put the game in a delay.

The delay lasted more than an hour and 20 minutes before it was resumed. At this point, ASU Head Coach Dervin Taylor made a decision to change his pitcher and brought in senior Kelsey Sellars.

Sellars was able to get out of the inning as a hard hit ball was knocked down in the circle and tossed to first baseman Kelsi Kautz.

The Grizzlies threatened in the top of the second inning as freshman designated hitter April Riggins reached on a throwing error before senior second baseman Tayler Else scorched a double off the center field wall. The Grizzlies were unable to score either.

The Rangers capitalized on a 2-run single in the bottom of the second to get the upper hand on two hits and one error.

Adams State was able to get their second hit of the game to lead off the top of the third inning before an 11-pitch at bat by Kalin Johnson spelt the end of any rally the Grizzlies would be able to build. The Grizzlies got one runner on base in the fourth inning again but did not get any closer to scoring.

The Grizzlies finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning as Johnson hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kyana Quarrell, who reached on an error.

Meanwhile, Sellars settled in the circle as she tossed three straight 1-2-3 innings and sat down 11 batters in a row. The streak was snapped in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Rangers scored four unearned runs on three hits and one error to seal the game.

The Grizzlies will attempt to make it to the championship game by going through the consolation side when they play the winner of Metro State and Western New Mexico at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
