GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (May 7, 2015) – Adams State University's
Andrew MacMahon limited the No. 3 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to three runs on seven hits but the senior's efforts ultimately fell short during a 3-2 loss to begin RMAC Tournament play for the Grizzlies.
With the loss, ASU now faces Colorado State University-Pueblo at 12:00 p.m. on Friday from Sam Suplizio Field. Live stats, video, and audio will be made available to fans.
A promising start for the Grizzlies was quickly met with a series of unfortunate events. Adams State took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single from
Jerid Huggins. The knock scored
Chris Morley who began the game with a walk.
MacMahon began his outing with two quick outs in the bottom of the frame and appeared to escape the inning after a Bligh Madris grounder to short. However, the roller inadvertently graced an umpire which allowed Madris to reach first and continue the inning. A failed pickoff attempt at first base by MacMahon followed which advanced Madris to third and scored Kyle Serrano. Further damage was halted as an Austin Wallingford strike out eventually brought the inning to a close.
In the fourth,
Jaron Dorchinez crossed home plate to push ASU ahead once again, 2-1. Dorchinez provided a leadoff single and stole second before
Zach Moldenhauer connected for an RBI single to center field.
The Mavericks retaliated in their half of the inning as a Dorchinez error allowed Wallingford to score for the equalizer.
MacMahon appeared to grow stronger with a 1-2-3 fifth and an effective sixth before CMU notched the eventual game-winning run in the seventh.
Adams State was primed to score in the eighth thanks to a
Dillon Bollig double but the junior was left stranded after a pair of ASU strikeouts.
MacMahon struck out three and did not allow a walk in 7.1 innings of work during the program's first postseason game since 1976. Moldenhauer led the offense with three hits and an RBI.
