ALAMOSA, Colo. (September 13, 2015) – Adams State University played their home opener on Sunday against Lubbock Christian University. The Chaparrals brought a 2-0 record into Alamosa and remained unblemished on the season by virtue of a 2-1 final against the Grizzlies.
Adams State University (0-3) came into the game with a chip on their shoulder. Entering Sunday's match ASU produced 15 shots on goal but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. That quickly changed against the Chaparrals a mere 37 seconds into the game as
Mario Castro netted a goal with an assist from
Shane Wagner. Castro became the first Grizzly this season to light up the scoreboard.
Despite the good start the Grizzlies couldn't keep it going and Lubbock Christian (3-0) took it from there. LCU scored two unanswered goals putting a cap on the period. Andres Ramirez brought things even for LCU while Mbongeni Ndlovu put them over the top with his fourth goal of the season.
The second period saw plenty of action as the Grizzlies tried to tie the affair. ASU pushed the pace forcing balls up field to their forwards and they were rewarded with some good opportunities but couldn't capitalize.
For the first time all season the Grizzlies were outshot. The Chaparrals got off 16 shots and 12 on goal to ASU's 15 and 4 on goal. Adam State's Baumeister did all he could to keep the Grizzlies in the game- slapping, diving and tackling his way to 10 saves.
Next week ASU enters their foray into conference play in Rapid City, S.D. as they face RMAC newcomers, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Both ASU and SDSMT went scoreless through their first two matches of the season. Both teams ended their scoring drought in their third games, respectively.
