WBB | Tough Third Quarter Ails Grizzlies In Loss To Metro State

ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 1st, 2016) — Adams State University opened the new year with a home game against Metropolitan State University of Denver on Friday night. The Grizzlies started well in the first quarter and we're able to stay competitive and capture a lead. As the game entered the second half Adams State was unable to keep pace; ultimately suffering a 71-45 setback.

The game drops Adams State to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Mountain Division of the RMAC. The win elevates the Roadrunners to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the Rocky Division of the RMAC.

The Grizzlies were led by Lena Jaycox who netted 12 points in her 26 minutes. Nicole Broyles and DeShea Wilkes chipped in for 13 additional points between them. ASU also got a strong performance from Johnette Brown as the junior pulled down 9 rebounds and shot 66 percent from the field. Brown finished the contest with 8 points.

Adams State stayed competitive for the most part aside from the third quarter where production slowed to a crawl. The Grizzlies were outscored by 13 points in the frame. The 13 points equaled their deficit in all the other quarters combined. ASU mustered just 7 points in the third quarter and set the stage to fall behind by as much as 30 points in the fourth.

MSUD made things easier on themselves, taking away 14 possessions from Adams State. The ASU miscues translated into 25 points off turnovers for the Roadrunners. Metro State also tallied 10 fast break points, and 33 points off the bench. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies went 36.5 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Up next, the Grizzlies welcome the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to Alamosa on January 2nd. UCCS is the second-ranked scoring offense in the conference. The Cougars also average 12 steals per game which also ranks second at the conference level.
Action is slated to begin at 5:00pm in Plachy Hall.
