ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 2, 2016)—Despite the Adams State University offense producing three double-digit scorers, it was University of Colorado-Colorado Sprigs that came out on top from Plachy Hall on Saturday night.
UCCS (8-5, 4-3 RMAC) and star forward Brittany Hernandez left Adams State (2-8, 1-6 RMAC) in bitter disappointment with a 72-58 defeat to ring in the early stages of the New Year.
Behind Hernandez's second consecutive double-double, the Mountain Lions were in complete control in tonight's matchup against the Grizzlies. Hernandez paced UCCS with 20 points and 10 rebounds while also leading the team in assists with four. Paired with 14 points and seven steals from guard Jen Vigil, the duo proved to be too much for the Grizzly defense.
The first half was relatively competitive as the Grizzlies utilized the Mountain Lions slow start to keep the score within five during the early stages of the first quarter. However, Hernandez and Vigil powered UCCS to score 15 consecutive points to close out the first segment of regulation, building a 37-17 lead heading into halftime.
The second half spelled more trouble for the Grizzlies as turnovers and the inability to find an answer for Hernandez proved costly. The third quarter proved to be a big one for Hernandez as half of her points were scored in the frame. Adams State was able to narrow the game's lead in the fourth quarter and outscored the Mountain Lions in the final stanza, 28-12.
Offensively the Grizzlies were led by the trio of
DeShea Wilkes,
Cydney McHenry, and
Lena Jaycox as each scored 14 points, respectively.
A strong offensive showing in the fourth quarter allowed the Grizzlies to trim the UCCS lead to 14 points. In the second half, the Grizzlies converted 12-26 (46.2%) of their shots. In comparison, the Grizzlies only converted 7-29 (24.1%) of their shots in the first half.
Adams State's Head Coach
Larry Joe Hunt stated after the game "I thought we played better at times tonight. We played a very talented and well coached UCCS team. We have to continue to build on the second half and address the turnovers".
Adams State will now prepare for back-to-back weekends away from Alamosa starting on January 8 with an RMAC battle against Colorado Christian University. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. Live stats will be accessible for fans by following
