ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 22, 2016)—A strong second half surge spearheaded by the dominant play of junior guard
Lena Jaycox was almost enough for Adams State University's comeback bid against the visiting New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls on Friday night. A last-chance desperation three-point shot from Jaycox glanced off the glass in the final seconds of regulation, sealing the Cowgirls first victory since the second week of November. NMHU left Alamosa by beating the Grizzlies, 51-49.
Adams State (2-13, 1-11 RMAC) was paced by Jaycox, who led the team in scoring with 10 points. With the results, it marks Jaycox's ninth consecutive game scoring in double figures. Sophomore forward
Nicole Broyles chipped in nine points and led the team with 11 rebounds.
Ultimately a slow start to the game put the Grizzlies at a disadvantage that they could not overcome. The Plachy Hall crowd witnessed the Grizzlies only post seven points in the first quarter. Three of those points came from the free throw line as the Grizzlies shot 9.5 percent (2-21) from the field for the quarter. The Cowgirls went into halftime carrying a 33-18 lead.
However, momentum shifted for head coach
Larry Joe Hunt's squad after the break. A strong defensive presence limited the Cowgirls to only 18 points in the second half. The Grizzly offense on the other hand exploded to score 31 points. In the first half the Grizzlies converted on only 12.5 percent (4-32) of their shots. In the second half, ASU shot 41.7 percent (10-24) compared to the Cowgirls 22.7 percent (5-22). Jaycox scored eight points in the second half as
Cardelia Allen chipped in six in the comeback bid. Unfortunately, the mistakes made in the first half were too much to overcome. While the Grizzlies trailed by as much as 20 points, the comeback bid fell short and leaves the Grizzlies in the midst of a nine-game losing streak.
The Grizzlies will now prepare for a Saturday match-up against Western New Mexico University. The game will tip-off at 5:30 and live stats will be accessible for fans by following
