WBB| McDonald led Grizzlies unable to stop Mustangs

Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 23, 2016)—The Adams State University Grizzlies women's basketball team lost in Saturday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) match-up against the Western New Mexico University Mustangs by a 62-49 score.
The Grizzlies (2-14, 1-12) were paced by freshman forward Lauren McDonald who led the team offensively in scoring by posting 13 points in Saturday's affair. The Salida native shot 3-6 from the field, converted 1-1 from shots from beyond the three-point line, and was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. Guard Cardelia Allen chipped in 10 points for the Grizzlies and led the team in rebounding with seven.

In the early outings of the first half of regulation the game's narration was much of back and forth affair. But after a sluggish start on behalf of the Grizzlies to kick off the second quarter, the visiting Mustangs were able to take control of the game. WNMU was able to monopolize on ASU's lack of offensive production and took control of the game's momentum after the Grizzlies only posted seven points in the second quarter.  In first half of regulation the Grizzlies only connected on 28.6 (8-28) percent of their shots and converted only 53.8 (7-13) percent on their free throw attempts. However, even with the Grizzlies having a lack of offensive consistency, ASU only trailed the Mustangs 26-23 heading into halftime.

The Mustangs opened up the second-half on a 12-4 run and quickly extended their lead over the Grizzlies. With WNMU getting strong offensive production from the duo of Jordan Gutierrez and Deandra Williams who scored 15 and 13 points each respectively, allowed the Mustang offense to gallop. Eleven of Williams's thirteen points came in the second half and she proved to be a defensive mismatch for the Grizzlies to address.

Adams again only mustered seven points in the third quarter and ultimately WNMU was able to use a 21 point third quarter production from their offense to secure the game.

Lena Jaycox's nine game consecutive streak of posting double-digit scores was snappedtonight after a late injury forced her to exit the game mid-way in the fourth quarter. Before the injury Jaycox scored eight points in Saturday's game against the Mustangs. WithSaturday's RMAC results, Adams State has now lost ten straight conference games. Head Coach Larry Joe Hunt stated after the game "I feel our players are still playing hard and with all of our injuries, they still came to work. We just have to stay in the game long enough until the ball bounces our way".

The Grizzlies will prepare for their next RMAC game against the Chardon State College on January 29. The game will be played at Plachy Hall and is slated for a 5:30 tip-off. Live stats will be made accessible for fans by following www.asugrizzlies.com .
