Caetano Announces Departure After Historic Run at Adams State

Alamosa, Colo. – Mario Caetano, who has led the Adams State University women's basketball program for the past six years, including the last four as head coach, announced Friday that he has accepted a new position and will be departing the university.

During his tenure, Caetano guided the Grizzlies to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and became the winningest coach in program history this season, surpassing 97 career victories.

"I am incredibly excited for Mario as he transitions into this new role," Adams State Director of Athletics Katelyn Smith said. "Mario changed the culture of women's basketball here and truly raised the bar for what this program can accomplish. The dedication he has poured into our student-athletes and our community over the years has left an incredible mark. We are eager to build on the momentum and culture he established during his time here."

Caetano compiled a 99-56 overall record and led the Grizzlies to the most successful season in program history in 2023-24, finishing with a 25-9 record. Under his leadership, Adams State earned three straight NCAA Tournament berths and captured a share of the RMAC regular-season championship in 2024.

"Adams State will always hold a special place in the hearts of my family and me. The relationships we built, and the countless memories made in Plachy Hall are something we will always cherish," said Caetano. "I want to sincerely thank everyone in the athletic department, the university, and the Alamosa community for the way you embraced and supported my family throughout our time here. We have been truly grateful for the kindness and respect shown to us.

He also coached the program's first RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, Elaina Watson, and mentored Kiiyani Anitielu, who set the RMAC single-game scoring record.

"I also want to give a special thank you to all my former players. They are the true reason behind the success we've enjoyed over the past several years. Their commitment to this program is what made all those accomplishments possible, and I will always be proud to have coached them. These decisions are never personal — they are part of the business — and I leave Alamosa with the utmost respect and appreciation for this community," said Caetano.

Caetano's tenure included eight All-RMAC First Team and Second Team selections, back-to-back home RMAC tournament games and a historic run with three national tournament appearances that elevated Adams State women's basketball to new heights.
