ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 23, 2016) – Adams State University had their hands full on Saturday against conference foe Western New Mexico University. Despite entering the game with only one conference win, the Mustangs kept pace with the Grizzlies in a contest that came down to the wire.
Western New Mexico took an 88-85 lead with 2:07 remaining but Adams State rattled off a 9-0 run to close the game for a 94-88 triumph.
The Grizzlies (8-10, 7-6 RMAC) led by as much as 10 points in the minutes before halftime but the visiting Mustangs (1-17, 1-12 RMAC) fought back, resulting in numerous lead changes for the remainder of the game.
Adams State shot an impressive 62.5 percent (20-32) in the opening stanza for a 53-44 halftime lead. Western New Mexico countered by shooting 52 percent (13-25) after the break as the Grizzly offense was unable to match their first half production.
A total of six Grizzlies finished in double figures led by 17 points from
EJ Hubbard II.
Kendyl Grover put forth another monster game with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists. The senior also added a block and a steal. Saturday marked the fourth consecutive game for Grover scoring in double figures.
Shakir Smith chipped in 16 points and 5 assists as
Bryan Umoru was good for 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Joe Bell Austin and
DJ Morgan rounded out ASU's top performers with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Adam Kesler finished with 17 points to pace the Mustangs in defeat as five other WNMU players scored in double figures.
Adams State remains home next weekend for games against Chadron State College and Regis University.
