ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 30, 2016) – A cold start was a sign of things to come for Adams State University against Regis University on Saturday from Plachy Hall. It took nearly five minutes for Adams State to make a field goal as the team shot 38 percent (19-50) for the night en route to a 74-62 defeat.
In a game almost entirely controlled by Regis, Adams State found themselves out of rhythm offensively. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies (9-11, 8-7 RMAC) searched for a defensive answer to stop Regis' Billy Hansen and Dexter Sienko. The duo combined for 35 points with Hansen draining six three-pointers and Sienko grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds, 10 of which were on the offensive glass.
The Grizzlies showed signs of life with a 10-2 run in the late stages of the first half. The surge was capped off with a layup from
EJ Hubbard II, giving ASU a 28-27 lead with 2:15 remaining before halftime. The lead was short-lived as Hanson responded with a three-pointer just 13-seconds later to push Regis back on top.
The Grizzlies appeared on the verge of taking the lead after the break and reached within a point at 49-48. Unfortunately, Regis quickly grew their lead into double digits to halt any chance of an Adams State comeback. After a Hubbard II trifecta to bring ASU within four, Regis went on a 13-0 run, giving the Rangers their largest lead of the game at 71-54.
Oddly enough, Adams State statistically shot better than the Rangers during the conference tilt. However, Regis countered with a significant edge in total rebounds (44-36) and offensive rebounds (20-9).
Shakir Smith and
DJ Morgan each provided 18 points for Adams State in defeat. The team's 62 points is the second lowest point total in a regular season game during the 2015-16 campagin (61 points vs. Colorado Mines).
The Grizzlies look to rebound next week on the road against Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
