SPEARFISH, S.D. (February 5, 2016) – Behind 25 points and a 7-of-10 shooting performance from three-point range,
Shakir Smith led Adams State University to a 74-58 triumph over Black Hills State University.
As a team the Grizzlies shot a staggering 59.6 percent (28-47) while finishing at 59.1 percent (13-22) from three. Both marks rank second in single-game performances for ASU during the 2015-16 season.
It took nearly three minutes for either team to register points on the scoreboard but once the ASU offense started rolling they never looked back. The Grizzlies began the game on an 8-0 run and soon reached a double-digit lead by the midway point of the opening stanza. For the first half, the Grizzlies shot 66.6 percent (14-21) from the field and 60 percent (6-10) from three to take a controlling 34-20 halftime lead.
Adams State continued to control the game after the break as the Yellow Jackets never reached closer than eight points. The dominating performance carried over from start to finish as the ASU lead grew to 25 with a
EJ Hubbard II jumper with 2:14 remaining.
Not only did the Grizzly offense produce gaudy numbers but also held Black Hills State in-check by limiting them to shooting 32.8 percent (22-67).
Joining Smith in double figures were teammates
DJ Morgan and Hubbard with 19 and 12 points, respectively. Together, Morgan and Hubbard combined to shoot 4-of-6 from downtown. Nick Ongarato paced Black Hills State with 15 points and four rebounds.
The Grizzlies face South Dakota School of Mines & Technology tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. from Rapid City, S.D.
