STEPHENVILLE, Texas (November 11, 2016) – Friday night resulted in a difficult start to the Texan Tip-Off Classic for Adams State University against No. 10 Tarleton State University.
The Grizzlies (0-1) were defeated, 89-59. Adams State wraps up their tournament play tomorrow against Texas-Permian Basin at 1pm MT.
Against Tarleton, the Grizzlies held an 8-7 advantage after
Jarrett Givens' second trifecta of the night at the 15:23 mark. It unfortunately served as the last ASU lead of the game. After that, the Texans went on a 9-0 run and opened a double digit lead midway through the opening stanza. The lead grew to 21 after a dunk by Josh Hawley in the final minute before the break. Adams State went without a field goal during the last 4:05 before halftime.
ASU went into the locker room trailing 45-25 as the Grizzlies shot 30.4 percent from the field. Providing further cause of concern were foul troubles as ASU collected 17 personal fouls in the first 20 minutes of play. The duo of
Shane Johnson and
Bryan Umoru picked up four fouls apiece to limit their impact for head coach
Russ Caton. Umoru concluded the first half with one point after exiting with under 10 minutes to play. Johnson was charged with his fourth foul right before halftime after chipping in 3 points as a starter.
Foul problems and shooting woes continued to plague the Grizzlies in the second half.
J.R. Tailey ran into foul issues and ultimately fouled out as did Johnson. The Texans continued to grow their lead and eventually held a 34 point margin over the Grizzlies as the game entered its final stages.
Givens led ASU with a team-high 15 points by going 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-6 from downtown. Givens added 8 rebounds. Umoru,
Brandon Pasker, and
Jakolbhi Gillette each added 8 points in the loss. The Grizzlies concluded the non-conference tilt with 21 turnovers and 31 personal fouls while shooting 33.3 percent (15-45) from the field.
Four Texans finished in double figures led by 16 points from Ridell Camidge. Romond Jenkins chipped in a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Tarleton State shot 50.8 percent (33-65) from the field. The exceptional shooting night was aided by 48 points in the paint.
The Grizzlies conclude the Texan Tip-Off Classic tomorrow against Texas-Permian Basin at 1pm MT. Live stats and KSPK audio will be available to fans.
