STEPHENVILLE, Texas (November 12, 2016) – Trailing by seven with 31 seconds remaining, Adams State University made a feverish rally to get within two points of UT-Permian Basin with seven seconds left in regulation. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies were unable to complete the comeback; falling 97-93 to conclude their participation in the Texan Tip-Off Classic.
Throughout the game, the Grizzlies (0-2) did their best to keep up with the Falcons who shot an impressive 62.7 percent (32-51) from the field and 50 percent (10-20) from three-point territory. Although they were unable to match UTPB in shooting, the Grizzlies shot a healthy 48.4 percent (31-64) from the field and 85.2 percent (23-27) from the free throw line.
The Falcons took a 95-88 lead with 31 seconds left after a Zeldric King fastbreak dunk. The Grizzlies responded with a
Bryan Umoru three-pointer on the next possession. After two missed UTPB free throws, ASU inched closer with a
Shane Johnson layup to make it 95-93. The Grizzlies quickly fouled to stop the clock but UTPB successfully converted their two free throw attempts to seal the win.
J.R. Tailey led ASU with 17 points while shooting 10-of-11 from the field. Johnson added 17 points as Umoru and
Brandon Sly each chipped in 14. The Grizzlies had nine players score in the game which translated to a 41-15 edge for ASU in bench scoring.
UTPB's Daeshon Francis led all players with 27 points.
The Grizzlies remain in the Lone Star state for a Monday meeting with No. 20 Midwestern State University at 6:30 p.m. MT.
