GUNNISON, Colo. (November 13th, 2016) --- The Adams State University volleyball team closed out the regular season last night at Western State Colorado with a decisive 3-0 sweep.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead to open the 1
st set. Still trailing later in the set, Adams rattled off 5 unanswered points to take a 13-12 lead. WSCU would respond with 5 unanswered points of their own to reclaim the lead 17-13. The lead would then change hands several more times until
Nina Mody-Bailey caught fire and finished off a 5 point streak with an ace to win the set 25-23.
The 2
nd set was just as tight with both teams scoring in streaks. Adams State scored 5 out of 6 points during a stretch in the early going, but Western responded with 5 straight midway through the set. That streak put the Mountaineers on top 16-12. The Grizzlies would reclaim the lead after a pair of attack-errors from WSCU's Jordan Eatwell, giving ASU a 24-22 advantage.
Nina Mody-Bailey again ended the set with a kill off an assist from Rachel Ringler by a final score of 25-23.
The Grizzlies opened up with a 10-6 lead early on in the 3
rd set. Western would cut the deficit to just 1 point several times throughout the rest of the set, but could not tie it up or take the lead. Up 21-20, the Grizzlies scored 4 of the next 5 points to put the game away 25-21.
Mallory Grimsrud led the team with 10 kills and 4 blocks.
Hannah Atkinson and
Briannah Mariner also added 9 kills each.
Savannah Smith recorded 25 digs on the night.
This was the 3
rd meeting between the teams this season with the Grizzlies winning all 3. Adams State swept Western 3-0 on September 9
th at the CSU-Pueblo tournament and won 3-2 at home on September 30
th.
Up next is the RMAC Volleyball Tournament for Adams State (16-11, 11-7 RMAC). The Grizzlies are seeded at 7
th and will face off against Colorado School of Mines who is the #2 seed, in Golden on November 15
