GOLDEN, Colo. (November 15th, 2016) --- The Grizzlies could not complete the RMAC Tournament upset of Colorado Mines tonight, losing the 4
th and 5
th sets on their way to a 3-2 defeat.
Playing on the road against the defending RMAC Tournament champions from Colorado Mines did not scare Adams State. The Grizzlies came in as the 7 seed to face the 2 seeded Orediggers, and were huge underdogs tonight in Golden.
The 1
st set stayed fairly even through its entirety. Down 13-9, the Grizzlies fought back with 5 of the next 6 points to tie things up 14-14. ASU looked to have the set won when they went up 24-22 near the end of the game. The set then went into extra points as the Orediggers fought to a 28-26 win.
The Grizzlies were not going to let the same thing happen in the 2
nd set. The team got off to a quick 7-3 lead before Mines knew what had hit them. Later in the set, ASU scored 6 straight points to extend the lead to 18-10. The Orediggers fought hard to overcome the deficit, but a determined Adams State squad would not allow it, winning 25-18.
Midway through the 3
rd set, Adams State went on a 7-2 run and were leading 13-8.
Allie Miller later hit an ace to increase the lead to 17-11. Up 22-14, the Grizzlies would give up a 4-2 run, but it would not be enough for Colorado Mines as the Grizzlies took set 3 by a score of 25-18.
A stunned crowed watched as the teams entered the 4
th set. The Grizzlies had now won more sets (2) against the Orediggers than they had in the season's previous 2 meetings combined. Again, the Grizzlies took an early 8-3 lead. At one point,
Briannah Mariner had an amazing dig off of her foot which led to a kill by
Hannah Atkinson. A few minutes later, Adams scored 5 straight to increase the lead to 14-7 and the upset appeared to be a lock. After a few more back-and-forth points, the Orediggers went on an unbelievable 12-1 run, including 9 unanswered, to take a 24-17 lead. Mines would go on to win the set 25-18.
The Grizzlies controlled the 1
st portion of the 5
th set. Adams led 8-5 as the teams switched sides. Mines would not quit and went on a 9-2 run to put them in the lead 14-10. A couple of plays later, CSM's Ellie Monarch scored the game winning kill as the defending RMAC Tournament champions survive, winning the final set 15-11.
The Adams State volleyball team ends the year with a 16-12 (11-7 RMAC) record. Â Â Â Â
