WBB| Western State Drops Adams At The Buzzer

GUNNISON, Colo. (December 10th, 2016) --- The Adams State Women's Basketball Team lost a heartbreaker on the road against Western State tonight 39-41.

In the first, Lauren McDonald would hit a 3 pointer put the Grizzlies ahead 6-0 to start the game. Adams would hold the lead for the rest of the first, leading 8-4 after 1.

The Grizzlies kept the pedal to the floor in the second and outscored the Mountaineers 14-10 in the second. ASU never trailed in the game going into the half.

Western would come surging back in the third on a 17-11 run to take the lead 33-31 at the end of 3.

The fourth quarter was neck and neck all the way to the final buzzer. Midway through the quarter, Cydney McHenry hit a jumper to cut the Western lead to 1. This forced the Mountaineers to burn a timeout. A few minutes later, Nicole Broyles-Mortensen scored to put the Grizzlies up 37-36. With only a minute remaining, DeShea Wilkes scored on a layup to put the Grizzlies in a winning position at 39-38. Several turnovers later, the Mountaineers paced down the court and heaved a 3 point shot that fell with only 2 seconds remaining in the game. The Grizzlies could not throw up a miracle of their own, and fell to Western 39-41.

DeShea Wilkes put in 9 points and recorded 3 rebounds in the losing effort. The Mountaineers won the rebounding battle 46-35 and shot 5% better from the field.

Coach Hunt had this to say: "The ladies played hard tonight. It was the attention to detail at the end of the game that cost us. We have to be smarter down the stretch."

The Grizzlies play at Colorado Mesa tomorrow night at 5:30pm.
