CHADRON, Neb. (December 31, 2016) – The 2016 calendar year ended on a sour note as Adams State University fell to Chadron State College, 66-58, on Saturday night from the Chicoine Center.
The Grizzlies (5-9, 2-6 RMAC) trailed for a large portion of the game although keeping the score close more often than not. The game featured 8 ties and 10 lead changes but the Eagles (2-10, 2-6 RMAC) did grab their largest lead of 11 points in the final seconds of regulation.
A first half three-pointer by
Bryan Umoru with 16:38 left gave Adams State a brief 7-6 advantage but Chadron State responded quickly to reclaim the lead. The Grizzlies would go on to tie the game on six different occasions before the break but were unable to surge ahead. In the opening stanza, the Grizzlies shot 39 percent (11-28) from the field to go into halftime trailing, 32-29. The Eagles shot just 32.4 percent (11-34) but were more effective from downtown with 6 three-pointers compared to just 2 from Adams State.

Jarrett Givens three gave Adams State a 38-35 lead with 15:02 in the second half but the Grizzlies were unable to distance themselves from Chadron State who reclaimed the lead less than five minutes later. The Grizzlies grabbed their final lead via a
Shane Johnson jumper with 3:20 left to go-ahead, 52-51. However, the Eagles finished the game on a 15-6 run to take the win. Givens accounted for ASU's scoring production in that run with a pair of three-pointers in the final 30 seconds.
Brandon Sly finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds to collect his first double-double of the season. Sly added 5 assists and 2 steals. Johnson had 15 points with
Bryan Umoru and Givens adding 10 and 9 points, respectively.
For the game, ASU shot 37.9 percent (22-58) from the field and 23.3 percent (7-30) from downtown.
Adams State is back in action at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Jan. 6
