ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 13, 2016) – Western State Colorado University sank a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 99-98 win over Adams State University on Senior Night.
The Mountaineers' Will Duggan hit the bottom of the nylon in front of his own bench as time expired to upset the Grizzlies who were in search of their second consecutive weekend sweep.
In the dramatic, high scoring affair both teams shot precisely 50 percent from the field but it was the Mountaineers' three-point shooting that served as a dagger towards ASU. In total, WSCU sank eight three-pointers in the second half. Compare that to just seven made trifectas for ASU during the entire game.
Despite the close finish both teams experienced significant leads at some point during the conference tilt. With a
Vitor Machado fastbreak layup the Grizzlies took a 38-28 lead with 8:16 remaining in the opening stanza. Western State held their largest lead of seven points after a Ben Beauchamp three-pointer with 4:01 remaining in the second half.
After Western State's largest lead, the Grizzlies responded with an 8-0 run to take a 92-91 lead with 2:10 left. The Mountaineers later took a 94-92 lead via two Beauchamp free throws.
Shakir Smith committed his fifth foul on the play that sent Beauchamp to the line thus forcing him to sit out the final 1:17 of regulation.
Now without their top scorer, ASU's
DJ Morgan answered the call. Morgan – who subbed in for Smith – went on to score the next five points for ASU to give the Grizzlies a 97-96 lead with 27-seconds remaining. The ASU defense held tough on WSCU's next possession as
Kendyl Grover pulled down a rebound after a miss. The senior was quickly fouled; sending him to the other end of the floor for a pair of free throws. Grover went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, giving ASU a 98-96 advantage. It unfortunately set up the game-winner as Western State had 13-seconds to work with on their final possession.
Joe Bell Austin led the Grizzlies in scoring with 17 points as Grover collected his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Morgan,
Bryan Umoru, and Smith chipped in 16, 14, and 11 points, respectively.
Duggan paced Western State with 20 points and five assists.
With their home schedule complete the Grizzlies hit the road for the final two weeks of regular season play. First up is a meeting at Western New Mexico University on Feb. 19
