SILVER CITY, N.M. (February 19, 2016) --
Kendyl Grover collected his fifth double-double of the season to highlight Adams State University on Friday night in an 84-66 win over Western New Mexico University.
Grover and the Grizzlies did start sluggish against the Mustangs who jumped to a 16-7 lead just five minutes into the game. It wasn't until 3:36 before halftime did the Grizzlies regain the lead. Sending ASU past WNMU were a pair of Grover free throws for a 32-31 advantage. Both teams would trade the lead after that with ASU getting the 40-39 upper hand at the break.
The Grizzlies were able to carry themselves moving forward thanks to a 56 percent shooting clip in the second half. ASU also found reliability at the charity stripe by draining 14-of-17 attempts while shooting a conservative 2-of-4 from three-point range. The hot shooting -- mixed with WNMU's offensive struggles -- allowed the Grizzlies to outscore the Mustangs by 17 points in the second stanza. The ASU lead blossomed to 20 in the late stages of the game to secure the program's 12
th conference victory of the season.
Grover finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists during the win as
Shakir Smith dropped 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
DJ Morgan followed with 14 points and 7 rebounds.
EJ Hubbard II came off the bench for 13 points and a season-high 4 blocks.
The Mustangs had four players reach double figures paced by Emery Range and Willie McCray with 12 points each.
The win gives ASU a season sweep over WNMU and extends the Grizzlies' winning streak over the Mustangs to six games. The Friday night occasion also marked the final conference meeting between the two as WNMU is slated to join the Lone Star Conference in 2016-17.
