LAS VEGAS, N.M. (February 20, 2016) – A buzzer-beating three-pointer by
DJ Morgan sent the game into overtime but Adams State University was unable to secure a win off the dramatic basket as New Mexico Highland University clawed out a 95-92 overtime victory on Saturday night.
The loss gives ASU (13-13, 12-9 RMAC) back-to-back weekends of splitting games with the regular season now entering its final week.
Despite the loss, the Grizzlies have officially clinched a RMAC Tournament berth after the dust from Saturday's conference games settled.
Against New Mexico Highlands, the Grizzlies held a 34-31 halftime lead but the Cowboys caught fire after the break. During the second half the Cowboys shot 62 percent (15-24) from the field and 63 percent (7-11) from three-point range. The stellar shooting translated into the Cowboys seizing control – and the lead – during the final stanza. New Mexico Highlands took a 37-35 lead in the opening minutes after halftime and held onto the lead until
Joe Bell Austin drained a three-pointer with 3:03 remaining in regulation.
The outcome did not look promising for ASU who trailed by four points with 19-seconds left. After Head Coach
Russ Caton called a timeout, the Grizzlies responded with an Austin layup to narrow the NMHU's lead to 80-78. After a NMHU free throw the Grizzlies faced an 81-78 deficit with eight seconds remaining. The stage was set for Morgan's buzzer-beater as the junior drained the clutch shot in front of his bench as time expired to force overtime.
Shakir Smith added a three-pointer of his own to begin overtime but NMHU's Jonathon Mines took over and tallied nine of the team's 14 points in the extra frame. ASU took a 92-91 lead with 49-seconds remaining but the Cowboys rattled off a 4-0 run from that point to take the win.
It was a career night for senior
Vitor Machado who produced a season-high 22 points in his fourth consecutive start. Machado shot an impressive 6-of-8 from three while adding three assists and two rebounds. Smith finished with 24 points as Austin and Morgan chipped in 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Mines had a game-high 32 points as Marlon Johnson added 16 points and 15 rebounds to highlight NMHU.
