ALAMOSA, COLO. (February 13, 2016)— A pair of sensational efforts from junior guard
Cydney McHenry and freshman guard
Arianna Barnes was just enough to carry Adams State University over long-time rival Western State Colorado University on Saturday night. The combined duo of McHenry and Barnes combined for 41 points and helped seal the 68-64 victory over the visiting Mountaineers on Senior Night. With Saturday's results, the Grizzlies have snapped their fourteen-game consecutive losing streak within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
The Grizzlies (3-19, 1-17 RMAC) were paced offensively by McHenry, who posted a career-best 22 points behind 7-18 shooting from the field. McHenry was a consistent threat inside and outside the paint tonight against the Mountaineers and when she didn't score points; she put the visiting team into early foul trouble. The junior guard was phenomenal from downtown and converted 3-8 of her shots from behind the three-point line, while adding another five points from the free-throw line. The Dolores native also led the team in assists with six and picked up four rebounds and four steals in the contest against WSCU. With the results against the Mountaineers, Saturday's game marked the fourth straight game McHenry has scored in the double-digit margin.
Not to be outdone by her counterpart, Barnes chipped in 19 points onto the scoreboard for the Grizzlies. Her clutch free-throw shooting proved to pay dividends towards the end of regulation, as the freshman guard converted 9-10 of her shots from behind the charity stripe.
In the early stages of the game, the Grizzly offense electrified the scoreboard and at times proved to be too much for the visiting Mountaineer defense. Behind the thee-point shooting ability of
Johnette Brown, McHenry, and Barnes, the Grizzlies converted 50 percent (6-12) of all their shots from behind the three-point line. Paralleled with a 43.5 percent conversion rate (10-23) from the shots taken from the field, the Grizzlies offense was in a consistent rhythm. A solid defensive formula limited the WSCU offense effectiveness. In comparison, WSCU only converted on only 34.6 percent (9-26) of their shots taken from the field and converted on only 25 percent (3-12) on shots taken from downtown.
A strong offensive first half on behalf of the Grizzlies proved to be the difference maker in Saturday's game. The Mountaineers offense outscored the Grizzlies 39-35 in the second half and limited the Grizzlies effectiveness to convert three-point shots. Half of the points ASU scored in the second half of regulation came forth via the free throw line. ASU only converted on 20 percent (1-5) shots from downtown in the second half compared the Mountaineers 50 percent (8-16).
The Grizzlies who had led by as many as 14 points in the game, quickly watched their lead close to within one point with only ninety second left in regulation. Two trips to the free throw from both
Lauren McDonald and Barnes, where both freshman players sank both free-throw attempts sealed the game for the Grizzlies.
For the Mountaineers, they were paced offensively by Harlie Williams and Taylor Long. Williams led the team with 20 points scored while Long chipped in 19.
Saturday's game against Western State marked the last home game for the Grizzlies this season. Traditionally the last home game fills in for Senior Night as this year's squad will graduate one lone senior,
Amber Tso. Tso, who battled injuries all year, played in 10 games this season, averaging 1. 5 points per game and a season high three points in the Dec. 12 showdown against Colorado Mesa University.
The Grizzlies will be in action next on Feb. 19 for an RMAC bout against Western New Mexico University. The game will be played in Silver City, N.M. and is slated for a 5:30 tip-off. Live stats will be made accessible by following www.asugrizzlies.con
