DENVER—The second doubleheader between Adams State University and Metro State University-Denver saw Adams State fall in both games.
The Grizzlies, now 3-3 and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, dropped the first game 6-1 before losing a narrow 3-0 game in the second.
In the opening game, the Grizzlies held the Roadrunners hitless until the second inning until the second inning. A 2-out double put Metro up before they scored two more a single run in the bottom of the fourth, two in the bottom of the fifth and sixth.
The Grizzlies turned to their bench in the top of the seventh inning to get their lone run as
Cheyenne Hamilton and
April Riggins had back-to-back doubles to left field before the team's fourth foul out of the game closed it out.
Kacee Schroeder was tabbed with the loss as she allowed all six runs, only three earned on seven hits and four walks. She got five strikeouts before
Madisen Vrabel came into the game and for the final two outs. Schroeder falls to 0-4 on the season.
Offensively, Adams State had six hits, four of which were doubles.
In the second game, both teams loaded the bases in the opening inning but they could not score once.
With the help of a walk and a throwing error, the Roadrunners scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Metro added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning, Head Coach
Dervin Taylor made a pitching change as he had Kaitlin Hoffman come in. In the inning she was able to quickly sit the Roadrunners down in order.
In the top of the seventh inning, Adams State promptly loaded the bases with no outs. But unfortunately a sacrifice fly attempt by
Kalin Johnson was nullified as
Cheyenne Hamilton was called for leaving third base early. That double play ended the ball game.
Adams State will host Western New Mexico for the home opening doubleheader on Saturday with games set to start at 12 and 2 p.m.
