ALAMOSA—The Adams State University softball team was able to salvage one win oin the weekend's four-game set with the Western New Mexico University Mustangs at the ASU Softball Field this weekend. The Grizzlies won Sunday's doubleheader opener 4-3 in walkoff fashion before dropping the second one, 5-4 in eight innings. Adams State is now 4-16 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
In the first game on Sunday, the two teams traded runs in the first inning, the Grizzlies committing two errors to allow the Mustangs to score before they countered with two hits including a triple by Tyler Hayes, who came around to score on a fielder's choice.
The Mustangs put together two hits to take a lead in the top of the second. After allowing another solo run in the top the fifth inning, Adams State put one of their stellar seventh inning comebacks as they came back for the walk off win. The first run came off a fielder's choice error from Kaitlin Hoffman before
Shaena Connelly doubled to left center for the game winning double.
In the second game both teams threatened early but the game was scoreless after the first two frames.
Adams State broke through to score first in the bottom of the third inning as
Paige Reichmuth took the first pitch she saw and drove it down the left field line for an inside the park home run.
After another scoreless inning, the Grizzlies added one more as
Gabrielle Griego hit a home run to deep center field.
WNMU then scored their four runs, two in the top of the sixth and two in the top of the seventh.
The Grizzlies battled back and scored two more runs to tie the game including the tying run on a wild pitch.
The Mustangs scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning.
On Saturday, the Grizzlies fell in both games with scores of 5-2 and 6-4.
In the first game, Adams State fell behind by five runs before rallying for two runs in the seventh inning. The first game on a
Tyler Hays triple down the left field line to force
Marissa Harmon home. The second run came off
Kelsi Kautz' ground out to the short stop.
In that game, Adams State was only able to gather six hits but allowed 13 hits and two errors.
In the second game, Western New Mexico jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the top of first and third before a double by
April Riggins scored
Alexandria Quintana and
Gabrielle Griego to tie the game.
The Mustangs then scored four runs, one in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the sixth before starting another seventh inning rally. This time Hays had a sacrifice fly before Griego scored a run on a fielder's choice.
Adams State returns to action on Saturday and Sunday for Pod Weekend action in Golden. They will have two games over the weekend against each Colorado School of Mines and Black Hills State University.
